About Us

Solano Avenue School is a small school of approximately 230 students (transitional kindergarten through grade six) nestled in a close-knit community between Dodger Stadium and Chinatown. We have earned the distinction of being named a California Distinguished School in 1996, 2000, 2006, 2012, and 2020. We have also been awarded Title I Academic Achievement School three years in a row. In 2009 Solano earned the distinction of being named a Blue Ribbon School, and in 2020 Solano was recognized as a National ESEA Distinguished School. This is largely because of our qualified staff, rigorous academic program, and high degree of collaboration.  We are a stable, diverse learning community dedicated to delivering an educational program of academic excellence to all students.

Our Mission

Solano Avenue Elementary School provides a safe, nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment, which promotes academic excellence and prepares all students to be self-motivated, life-long learners. Using the Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and California Content Standards (Social Studies, Art, Physical Education, English Language Development), Solano provides a rigorous academic program focused on developing 21st century skills, problems solving fluency, and collaborative learning. Students are taught to work together and encouraged to participate in evidence-based discourse.
Solano Avenue Elementary School utilizes the Leader in Me program, based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, to promote a culture of leadership, where students learn to be responsible for their own actions and their own learning. As students learn and apply the seven habits they strengthen their intrapersonal and interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, and their ability to work on a team, which have been identified as the top 21st century skills for success. Qualitative research from Johns Hopkins University recognizes the positive impacts of this program on student self-esteem, behavior, and academic success. This program also promotes positive relationships among and between peers, adults, children, and families. Each teacher develops a personal mission statement and each class works collaboratively to develop a class mission statement, which guides their social and academic growth.
Solano Avenue Elementary School prides itself on the long-lasting relationships it has forged over the years - between the school and the community, between students, between students and staff, and between families and staff. Solano Avenue Elementary is a home away from home for many students. It is a place where students feel loved and valued. Students and families are welcomed to school each and every day, and they know that they are an integral part of the Solano family, just as Solano Avenue Elementary is an integral part of this historic community. Family and community connections are a priority. Working with organizations such as; The Los Angeles Dodgers, The 100 Mile Club, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, The Chinatown Optimist Club, The Firecracker Run Committee, Dancing Classrooms Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Theater Academy, and The Historic Cultural Neighborhood Council, provides students with the opportunity to be involved in their community and develop a deeper understanding of community service.
